Red Patio

A POST-COVID-19 PUBLIC SPACE

RED PATIO is designed for the Tennis Arena Complex in Yekaterinburg, Russia. Originally the idea was creating an open patio space without having obstacles except preserving three mature trees already standing on the site.

In the middle of the design process, the COVID-19 pandemic hit us. Our design goal was twisted towards generating a public space that naturally keeps the distance between people, at the same time does not lose the feeling of being a part of a vibrant public mass.

Three pine trees radiate the rings of shrubs and penetrate into the interior space of Tennis Arena. Red Twig Dogwood keeps its strong red color of branches even during 7 months of long winter in Yekaterinburg. These rings are gradually declining its height outward, and create a diverse proportion of the pocket space for people to stroll and stay.
