PARCO CENTRALE DI PRATO

A DESIGN FOR A NEW CENTRAL PARK OF THE "TEXTILE" CITY

International selected competition for the design of the new central park of Prato in Italy that includes 3 ha park and 3000 m2 pavilions.

Parco Centrale di Prato is not just another urban park. The park is designed like an exquisite sheet of textile woven by a variety of threads, landscape, cultures, activities, history and contemporaneity.

The new park will be fully integrated in the city tissue as part of the gems of ?Prato necklace? along the historical route of the fortress wall where the urban highlights of the city are all located.
Understanding of adjacent surroundings determines the location of each program and variety of activities and plants embrace communities of any age and ethnicity now and in the future.

The park respects and optimizes the preservation of the existing values of the site.
Existing trees will be preserved and the vegetable gardens - historically present on site - are reflected into the new program of the park.
The rubble material after demolition of existing hospital will be reused to create filling topography, stabilized soil paving, rammed earth for street furniture and building material.

Wealthy ?textile? history of Prato is symbolized and crystallized into the design of the park.
The inclinations of the ?pleats? are designed to collect and direct the rain water through bioswales and rain garden in the watersheds, while at the cacuminal Mediterranean species create arid gardens. Careful study of prevailing winds and sun identify suitable plant species for all pleats, all together the plants improve the overall microclimate of the park. This landscape so articulate, rich in diversity, biological and cultural, creates a wide variety of space atmospheres.
