LEISURE AND ENTERTAINMENT RESORT ON THE BLACK SEA
With Russia?s shift toward capitalism, the desire for a ?Russian spring break? has emerged; a place for middle class, twenty-something?s to get away for a week and take in some sun, some nature, and to party together. The client had a gorgeous site along the Black Sea, with stunning nature on steep topography, allowing majestic views out to the sea. The challenge was how to provide a high quality resort and entertainment, retain the stunning nature while providing space for 10,000 people to stay at an affordable price.
The central valley was extremely steep, but was the obvious location for visitors to congregate. The concept was to form a stepped, tree village. Lifted on stilts, this hillside village would allow commanding views onto the black sea and form a series of public plazas for people to dance, drink and mingle amongst the tree tops.
This public spine would decent to the waterfront and form a floating ?beach-like? space. Not wanting to disturb the visual quality of the rocky cliff sides, a floating event space was formed. This would allow for concerts, a marina, sporting zone, and just a nice place to swim and dry in the sun.
The housing area was a diverse array of simple boxes scattered over the hills, each allowing for varying degrees of privacy and connection to nature. A network of step ways and walking paths interlinked, forming small spaces to bump into each other and to hang out.
All of it was focused around a central ropeway, which would not just allow for easy access to the complex site, but would also provide a grand entrance overlooking the entire site, valley, and seaside.
